
John (Jack) L Bulger, Jr., 81, of Indianapolis, passed away February 17, 2015. He was born May 18, 1933 in Indianapolis, IN, to the late John L., Sr., and Virginia Hiatt Bulger. Jack was a 1951 graduate of Park School for Boys and briefly attended Indiana University before joining the US Army which he served from December 1953 to March 1954.
Upon leaving the Amy Jack married Ruth Bondy in 1955 and joined his father John Sr. as a Realtor. In 1970 he became an appraiser until his retirement in 2005. During that time he received numerous accommodations and awards. As a member of the Indiana Association of Realtors and Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of Realtors he was a liaison to Senator Richard Lugar; President of American Society of Appraisers Indiana Chapter from 1978 – 1979; a Chairman for several boards and served on numerous committees. He was presented with the Edward L. Wright Achievement Award in 1987 for outstanding service to the community and distinguished leadership within the Society of Real Estate Appraisers; Hall of Fame Award in 1988 for contribution to Indiana Chapter V Society of Real Estate Appraisers; Distinguished Service Award in 1991 for continuous faithful service to MIBOR; Dick Snyder Service Award in 1992 for service and efforts of Indiana Association of Realtors.
Jack was also very involved in Indianapolis throughout his life through political and service groups. He was an Officer and Director with the Indianapolis & Indiana Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) from 1956 – 1969. During which this time he lead an effort with a few others to connect the students of the Indiana Blind School on North College Ave to Broad Ripple Village. This caused the now existing sidewalk located from 71st to 75th Street on College Ave. In 1967 he received the Key Man Award for service to the community. From 1966 – 1968 he was Ward Chairman of Washington Township 21 E. From 1968 – 1969 he served as the President of the Indianapolis Department of Parks & Recreation. He has received the Key to the City of Indianapolis from 4 different Indianapolis Mayors and the Sagamore of the Wabash from Governor Whitcomb in 1969.
Jack was also very involved with the Marion County Sheriff Department. He served as an Honorary Deputy from 1968 – 2002. He along with his son Russ graduated from the Civilian Academy in 1998. In that same year he received the Marion County Crime Fighter of the Year.
Along with his many accomplishments Jack enjoyed introducing his children to the month of May at the Motor Speedway which was filled with police escorts to the track and attending IU football & basketball games. He attempted to become a hunter but became more successful at collecting everything ducks. He along with his wife enjoyed vacationing in Brown County and Michigan.
Jack is survived by his children, Russell (Kristi) Bulger, Jennifer (Shane) Bury; grandchildren, Kaden and Kyle Bury; several nieces and nephews. Jack’s wife, Ruth Bondy Bulger preceded him in death in 2014.
